Wix vs WordPress in 2026: which should you build on?

Wix gets you online fast, with everything in one subscription. WordPress takes a little more setup, but the site is yours and can move anywhere. Here is how they compare, using each side's own documentation.

Short answer

Pick Wix if you want one bill, no setup, and you are happy for your site to live on Wix for good. A Wix site can't be moved to another host.

Pick WordPress if you want to own your site, choose your own host and grow into plugins, a store or custom features. Its old drawback, the time it takes to build, is much smaller now that AI builders work inside WordPress too.

What it costs

Wix and WordPress charge in different ways, so compare the total for the site you want, not the headline price.

Wix

Wix bundles hosting and the editor into one subscription. Its own pricing guide lists four plans, Light, Core, Business and Business Elite, from $17 to $159 a month when paid for a year up front. Monthly billing costs more.

The free plan is real but limited. It shows Wix branding, runs on a username.wixsite.com address, and includes 500 MB of storage and 1 GB of bandwidth. For a business site you will want a paid plan and your own domain.

WordPress

The WordPress software costs nothing. What you pay for is everything around it:

Hosting, which you pick yourself, from simple shared hosting to fully managed WordPress hosting.
A domain name, renewed every year.
Optional extras, such as a premium theme, paid plugins or an AI builder.

A simple WordPress site can cost less than a Wix plan, and a heavily customised one can cost more. The difference is that you choose each part, and you can swap any of them later.

Ease of use

Wix is built for people who don't want to think about the technical side. You sign up, pick a template or describe your site to the AI builder, and edit by dragging things around the page. Hosting and updates are Wix's job.

WordPress asks for a few decisions first: a host, a theme and usually some plugins. After that you edit pages in the block editor or a page builder, and you keep the site updated. Many hosts install WordPress for you and run updates automatically.

So Wix is easier on day one. The gap shrinks after that, and AI builders for WordPress have made the first build much faster than it used to be.

Owning your site

This is the biggest difference, and the one people tend to discover too late.

Wix is clear about it. Its help center says: "Since Wix is a SaaS solution, your site must run on Wix's servers." There is no export file and no way to host a Wix site somewhere else. If you leave, you rebuild the site on the new platform.

Templates work the same way. Wix writes that "it's not possible to switch to a different template for a site you already created". To change designs, you start a new site and move your pages, media, plan and domain across.

A WordPress site is a set of files and a database that you control. You can back it up, move it to another host, hand it to a developer or give it a new theme, and your content comes along. WordPress also has a built-in export for your posts and pages.

Design and templates

Wix gives you professionally designed templates and a free-form editor where you can place elements anywhere on the page. It is quick to make something that looks finished.

WordPress design comes from your theme, plus the site editor or a page builder if you want more control. The free theme directory is large, and premium themes cover most industries. Because the code is open, a developer can build any design you can describe.

AI builders change this part the most. Instead of choosing a template and filling it in, you describe the business and get a design made for it. That is true of Wix's AI builder and of WordPress builders like Dreamformer.

SEO

Both platforms can rank well. Wix has SEO settings built into its dashboard, which suits sites that want the basics handled in one place.

WordPress gives you more control. SEO plugins such as Yoast SEO and Rank Math add detailed settings, you choose your own host and caching for speed, and you can change any part of a page's code. For sites that plan to grow through search, that control is the main reason to pick WordPress.

Neither platform ranks a site on its own. Useful content, a fast site and links from other sites still decide most of it.

Online stores

Wix has a built-in store with Wix Payments. In the US, Wix lists its fee for standard card payments as 2.9% of the transaction plus $0.30.

WordPress stores usually run on WooCommerce, a free plugin that turns WordPress into a full shop. You pick the payment provider, and its fees apply. Plugins add shipping rules, subscriptions, bookings and more.

One more thing to weigh: switching later is lopsided. A WordPress site can move to any host. A Wix site can't be exported, so leaving Wix means rebuilding. If you are unsure, starting on the platform you can leave is the safer bet.
